Each waking moment
I listen
I listen to the chaos
Shouting and screaming
Like children
I listen
I listen to the depth of your pain
To the fear I see in your eyes
And the way you hold yourself
I listen
I listen as your tears fall
On the sidewalk where you are still
Where you look fearful
I listen
I listen to the look in your eyes
Beyond your gaze
Even in the haze
I listen
I listen not only with my heart
But my whole being
As time keeps passing us by
I listen
I listen on the days that looked dire
In those moments
And the moments that followed
I listen
I listen with my hand reaching out
As I save a child drowning in fear
As she goes into fight and flight
I listen
Damn it, I listened
I listen
